On Sat., May 18, beginning at 3pm, the Seaside Library (550 Harcourt Ave., Seaside) will host a free showing of the film The Councilwoman.Ĭouncilwoman Carmen Castillo is a Dominican City Councilwoman who maintains her job cleaning hotel rooms as she takes on her new role in politics. The city is threatening to take the Packing Shed away from Coach, and without a place to train he won’t be able to avoid the gangs in his neighborhood. But suddenly his life gets more complicated. He dreams of becoming a champion so he can get his mother and five siblings out of their cramped one-bedroom apartment in one of Salinas’ poorest barrios. The story revolves around seventeen-year-old Miguel Angel who spends every minute after school at the Packing Shed, working out with the Alisal Boxing Club. On Fri., May 17, at Downtown Book and Sound (213 Main St., Salinas), author and journalist, Claudia Meléndez Salinas will be talking about her book, A Fighting Chance. It is a vivid novel for young adults that captures the challenges of contemporary urban life in one of the Latino community’s poorest barrios. Many off these will be on display on Fri., May 17 from 10-noon at the CSUMB University Ballroom. These are just a few of the issues explored by CSUMB seniors in their Capstone projects. In 2014, the Pew Research Center found that Millenials are the most racially diverse generation in U.S. These dynamics have given rise to new and renewed social movements and protests. At the same time, the population of the United States is changing dramatically. Racial politics, gender politics and the politics of social class and sexual identity have generated a balkanized electorate and a volatile political climate. It is co-sponsored by and shown at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 490 Aguajito Rd., Carmel. This film will be shown in two parts – part two will be shown on June 20. For this installment of the Hidden Colors series, the filmmakers went around the country interviewing leading scholars and historians discussing topics such as: Global Racism, Racism in Religion, Omitted History, Financial Warfare, Health and Racism and solutions to some of these issues.
